Comprehension Canopy
Foregrounding content activates and builds background knowledge prior to reading. In the WorldGen curriculum, we use a routine developed through extensive research, called The Comprehension Canopy that explicitly connects new concepts and vocabulary to prior learning.
Paired Reading
Paired reading has been used effectively by teachers across ages and subject areas. This evidence-based strategy pairs a stronger reader with a less proficient reader to take turns reading aloud, encouraging each other, and engaging in an oral or written activity.
Guiding Questions
Research supports the use of guiding questions to improve students’ engagement and overall comprehension of academic text.
Lesson Sequencing
This is a unit-level approach to creating a progressive series of lessons that build essential disciplinary language and literacy skills while teaching content.
Formative Assessment
Brief formative assessments embedded throughout the unit provide opportunities for students to process and summarize what they are learning. Brief writing prompts focusing on students’ understanding of key concepts and vocabulary words not only solidify student learning but also provide insight for teachers on how to enhance instruction.
Connections Between Content and Students’ Lives
Learning is enhanced when teachers provide explicit opportunities for students to make connections with what they are learning. Making connections between new concepts and students’ prior knowledge and lived experiences benefits all students but is especially important for ELs as they navigate the language of social studies, complex text and rigorous content.
